The Kriegaffen (meaning "war apes" in German, singular form "Kriegaffe") were a series of mentally and physically enhanced apes created by Nazi scientist Herman von Klempt. Most Kriegaffen can be seen with cybernetic arms and metallic appendages on their heads.
List of Kriegaffen
Mukali
Mukali is a precursor of the Kriegaffe. It appeared in Lobster Johnson: Get the Lobster! and is owned by Niels Waxman. Mukali was sent to attack The Lobster but was killed when the Lobster stabbed a knife into its head and shorting out its rewired brain.
Kriegaffen #1 and #2
Kriegaffe #2 along with another Kriegaffe appears in B.P.R.D.: 1946 (the second is revealed to be #1 in Hellboy: The Companion). They were killed by Professor Trevor Bruttenholm's early B.P.R.D. team and Soviet soldiers of the Special Sciences Service.
Unit 1
Unit 1 appeared in the PSP version of the game Hellboy: The Science of Evil. When Hellboy had a mission in Japan in 1979, he met Unit 1 together with von Klempt. Later, Unit 1 and Hellboy got into a fight, but Hellboy was able to defeat Unit 1 and von Klempt. When Hellboy got into von Klempt's castle somewhere in Eastern Europe, he met the upgraded version of Unit 1 called Unit 1 advanced. This one had a minigun as his right arm, which is why Hellboy had trouble fighting him. Later Unit 1 was probably killed by the Demon Ape.
Kriegaffe #4
Number 4 appeared in the console version of the game Hellboy: the science of evil. While Hellboy was tracking von Klempt in a forest in Japan, he briefly encountered Number 4 who overpowered Hellboy. Later, when Hellboy finally found von Klempt in a temple, Number 4 appeared again and fought Hellboy. After their fight destroyed the whole temple, Von Klempt was accidentally hit by his Kriegaffe and fell off the cliff. Number 4 was killed by the debris of the collapsing temple.
Kriegaffe #9 (Brutus)
During the events of World's Greatest Paranormal Investigator (CBG), Herman von Klempt and his Kriegaffe #9 (dubbed Brutus by von Klempt) had been hiding out in a castle and performing experiments on kidnapped peasant girls. The duo was stopped by Hellboy when he interrupted one of their experiments. In the ensuing battle, Brutus's hands are destroyed by Hellboy, and he dies when Hellboy burns down the castle while rescuing von Klempt's last surviving victim.
Kriegaffe #10
A tenth Kriegaffe appears in the Conqueror Worm story arc aiding von Klempt and Inger von Klempt in their attempt to unleash the Conqueror Worm. After von Klempt captures Hellboy, Kriegaffe #10 repeatedly tortures him until the bases power shuts off, and Hellboy defeats the brute. Kriegaffe #10 attacks Hellboy again, but it is defeated, and killed.
Years later, the skeleton of this Kriegaffe was discovered by Kate Corrigan and Bruno Karhu while returning the spirit of the Lobster.[1]
Trivia
- Although Kriegaffe is technically German for 'war ape', Kriegsaffe is grammatically correct.
